It wasn't until a close friend showed me LOVEFiLM, and I saw Alan Wake available that I thought "Screw it" and added it to my list on high priority.

Soon enough, the game came. Later that day, I whacked it into the disc drive and my expectations where quite literally shat on. I expected it to be a short 5 hour, story-less game which involved obvious heavy amounts of repetition and to get boring quickly. Boy, oh boy I was wrong.

To sum up Alan Wake in a semi-comedic but truthful way, all I could say is: Imagine if Silent Hill and Max Payne had a bastard love child, which became best friends with every Stephen King book known to man (It's not like their all that different though, to be quite honest) and then ran off with this Stephen King book friend and cheated on him for Heavy Rain. That's Alan Wake for you.

It captures the atmosphere of the great old Silent Hill games, and the feel of Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, while leaving the mediocre story behind while adopting a Stephen King-esque story (Which works really well for video-games, I hope this isn't the only time we see a novel-style based Video-Game [[See what I did there? Yeah, I need a hobby]] ) and somehow also taking on the cinematic-type feel of the highly epic Heavy Rain video-game. Basically, It's a game that feels like a combination of many other great things. The result? Obviously great. It's like going to the shop and seeing Neapolitan ice-cream even cheaper than Vanilla, Strawberry and Chocolate ice-cream combined. It's like heaven rained on you and your wallet.

This is true value for money. The graphics are brilliant, the story is great, the music is brilliant at creating the atmosphere, the gameplay is deep and the whole game structure (The whole TV show theme) works better than anyone could have anticipated [[I'm looking at YOU Alone In The Dark - 2008]].

TL;DL - So you want to know. Out of ten, how good is this game?
8.5 / 10

Should you buy, borrow or burn?

BORROW.

It's a brilliant game, but while only being single-player, once you've completed the game, there's not much left to do. Also, the whole energizer product placement can get tediously obvious at times and distract you, pulling you out of the whole atmosphere of the game. You HAVE to play this game, you'll love it, but it's probably better to borrow it from a mate or a Video-Game rental service, as the story can only entertain for so long.

Thanks for reading,

Ryuuzaki Out.
